Autumn Decorating

As the calendar approaches September, I eagerly anticipate the coming autumn season. My heart longs for the comfort and coziness autumn brings. I love the scents of the season from the nostalgic tea olive blooms outside to the pumpkin and cinnamon baked goods inside. I light more candles this time of year and throw on knitwear any chance I get. Baked cinnamon apples and pumpkin bread fill my kitchen with wonderful aromas. I listen to more "movie music" while I work with a warm drink by my side. Autumn motivates me to do some major cleaning out and home refreshing before my decorating begins. The silver is polished, the wool blankets are dry cleaned, the autumn china is displayed, and decorations are planned.

I try to be intentional with how I decorate each year. I don't seasonally decorate outside of autumn and Christmas time. My "off months" keep me from creatively burning out and build even more excitement for the cozy decorating season to come. I keep a list in my planner from the previous year of what I need to purchase and what I would like to change this season. Learning to thoughtfully build on your decoration collection is a great way to save time and money. The process similar to building a wardrobe. What are your must have "base layers"? What are your "staples"? Are there holes in your "collection"? What few "trending pieces" would you like to switch out? What is your long term vision? What do you need to purchase for next season to get a step closer to your vision? While this method is extra helpful at Christmas, it can be used for any season or room in your house especially when you find yourself starting from scratch.

This week I put out my autumn wreath. I took my wreath from last year, disassembled it, and added the dried hydrangeas and pheasant feathers I dreamed of using last year. I gravitate towards a more natural way of decorating for autumn. I tend to avoid bright reds, oranges, and yellows. Instead, I opt for burgundies, burnt oranges, creams, and soft browns. I take inspiration from nature itself. I love using dried limelight hydrangeas to fill centerpieces and add softer touches throughout the artificial decorations in the home. Pheasant feathers are another autumn favorite (really a good year round home decor staple). Throughout the season, I'll even fill my vases with limbs from oaks and small maples.

My favorite store to shop is Hobby Lobby for my craft and seasonal decorating supplies for autumn. I focus on finding pieces that look as realistic as possible and stick to my ultimate vision. It's so easy to get distracted and end up purchasing cute things you later regret! If you don't have a Hobby Lobby in your area, or if just prefer a more streamlined online experience, I've linked products in my amazon storefront that are similar to what I've used for my wreath this year. My wreath this year might be my favorite of all time. The colors are very "me" and the added natural elements make it unique. I posted a video this week on how I created this year's wreath to help you make your own and hopefully inspire you a bit. If you missed it, you can watch on TikTok or Instagram (Click links below and don't forget to follow!) I'll continue sharing more decorating inspiration, tips, and tricks for the coming season, so stay tuned!
