Finding Joy in October

October comes this year like a much needed exhale. The seasons notably change. The cool air is refreshing. The air smells of turning leaves and bonfire smoke. Nature's vibrant show begins. I love hearing the crunching leaves underneath my feet.

September was a month of grief for my family. And while we are still in the midst of grieving our losses, October reminds me of God's goodness and sovereignty. Like the changing seasons of nature, we each experience seasons of growth, peace, loss, and pain. By fixing our eyes on Jesus, we can find the good in the hardest of seasons. We can choose to let the pain lead to growth. God will give us peace that surpasses understanding. He never leaves or forsakes us. He promises to be near to the brokenhearted. He keeps His promises, and He is good. Even when we don't understand.

I believe that God created the changing seasons as a reminder to us that no matter what we are experiencing today, a joyful season is ahead. The most beautiful time of year is when trees lose their leaves to prepare for the quiet of winter. Our seasons of loss, change, hardship, and pain can be made beautiful too. Each one shapes us into the person we're becoming. The changing seasons also remind us of God's sovereignty over all. He has crafted every detail. He provides for the migrating birds and butterflies. He paints every sunrise, sunset, and changing leaf. He prepares each plant and animal for the winter ahead with the promise of spring that is coming. Nature is fully reliant on God's provision, and we are reminded that we are too.

October often is a month full of busy activities and events. Don't forget to pause to watch the show nature is giving. Every day will bring new beauty. Breathe in the cold morning air. Settle down with a warm drink by a warm fire in the evenings. Walk through the woods. Study the intricacy of the spider webs we spend so much time complaining about. Enjoy time with loved ones. Pick mums for your kitchen. There is so much beauty and good because God is beautiful and good.
